Randy Pepper, a TSA security supervisor at Sea-Tac, was fired after he was suspected of stealing from passengers’ luggage. Turns out the allegations were true: Pepper pleaded guilty to stealing over $20,000 worth of stuff from checked bags.
This is hardly an isolated incident- hundreds of TSA staffers have been fired over the years for their sticky-fingered behavior, and theft of prescription medicine and eyeglasses have spiked since the TSA was founded.
The TSA simply can’t control its staff even if it wants to, and the will doesn’t quite seem to be there in the first place, so it’s best if you travel with carry-on only, or make sure that nothing valuable is packed in your checked luggage.
